If you are involved in an accident especially where there is an injury, please call 911 immediately.
Once you are safe, you may proceed and notify your insurance company of the incident. You can find the claims number of your insurance company on the pink slip or the front of your policy documents.

Please read below some information about common risks and a few easy preventive steps:
1) An up-to-date home inventory complete with photos and original bills can be a major asset in any claims.
Store them off-site, either in bank lockers or as soft copies in websites/cloud.
If possible, take a digital tour of every room to record furniture, electronics, antiques, works of art and other irreplaceable items in the home.
After a fire or major flood, it can be difficult to identify valuable items or their pre-loss condition.
2) Whenever you increase the value of the insured property, please call us and update. Following are some sample situations requiring a reassessment of needs and protection:
• Home Renovations
• Finishing Basement
• Home Office/Setting up Home business/Storing business contents in the house
• Occupancy Changes
• Acquire High Value Jewellery items and/or Fine Arts.
3) A general limit of $5000 is the maximum the policy pays for claims on Jewellery/paintings/electronic items. If you have any item that is exceeding this limit, store it in bank locker or purchase additional insurance by contacting us.
4) It is highly advisable to install a Monitored Security Alarm. You have to pay for the service, but, you will get a 10% reduction on home insurance premium.
5) Fire is a major risk to the home. Never leave a ‘lit’ fire unattended.
6) Water damage is on the rise and has surpassed fire as the leading cause of personal property claims.
The current climate changes and aging infrastructure are not helping either. Minimize the risk in a few simple steps:
OUTSIDE THE HOME
• Keep eavestroughs clear of debris
• Make sure downspouts extend away from home and drain away from the house
• Inspect Roof shingles regularly. Check if windows and doors are secured and free of moisture
• Take care of the snow, if it is near the house foundation, clear before it melts
• Winterize outdoor taps and faucets and then keep the taps open till springtime.
INSIDE THE HOME
• Make sure the main water shut-off valve is working, close it if you are going out of house for more than 3 nights.
• Install a backflow valve and/or a sump pump in your basement
• Seal cracks in foundation walls, basement floor
• Ensure the home is checked during absences, especially during heating season.
• If your property remains vacant for more than a month, your insurance company can deny coverage for any losses such as fire or water damage.
• Please notify the insurance company by contacting us if the house is vacant for more than 30 days at a stretch.
• Consider switching to a tankless water heater
7) Most home insurance policies cover water damage that happens suddenly and accidentally. Your policy has ‘Sewer back-up’ coverage to cover such unfortunate incidents.
Your policy also covers any damage due to ‘Overland water’ (flood-Surface Water).
However, your policy doesn’t cover damage that happens from slow leaks or water seepage or Mould. Inspect the basement regularly and repair immediately if there is any seepage.
